I paint (2013‒14) is a series featuring texts by painters that are painted on paintings. Only white primer is used for this purpose. In the darker areas of text on the image surfaces, the viewer sees canvas; the lighter text was painted over with two white glazes. Following in the tradition of Jasper Johns (“Is it a painting or is it a flag?”) raises a related question for each of these works: “Is it a text or is it a painting?”
The surfaces were designed to let the underlying structure be perceived while also allowing the texts to be read. The dark and light lines each yield a coherent text.
The texts originate from Marcel Duchamp, Agnes Martin, Gerhard Richter, Mark Rothko, Robert Ryman and Cy Twombly. They take up various fundamental aspects of painting and thinking, and at the same time, reflect central positions of the individual artists, who express themselves in their respective works.
